This site can sure need a little improvement. Pity that one of such monumental stature as our own Jose Rizal should have a site dedicated to him which lags in comparison to other commercialized sites. Even the number of guests seem trivial when compared to other sites dedicated to cars, music, scandals, and sex. Just goes to show how we people put emphasis on the very things Rizal warned against. Rizal is obviously a genius in his own right in his time and even up to the present and that's the main reason why I keep on encouraging all college students in different universities to keep on re-reading some of Rizal's writings including his own life-story so that they too, like myself, may be imbued with zeal and inspiration to constantly work hard so that later on, just like Rizal, they may be able to contribute something for the further development of the global society especially in the areas of ecumenism, inter-cultural understanding, education, and the training of the youth.

Even before I started formal schooling, my teacher uncle had taught me to memorize Rizal's poem -- "Sa Aking Mga Kababata." Through elementary and high school, I have always espoused the wisdom of developing and propagating our native language. When I started writing to newspaper editors in the 1960s, the necessity of developing and propagating our national language had always been among my earnest endeavors. In the Manila Chronicle issue sometime in June of 1970, columnist Celso Cabrera poked fun at my one-man demonstration within the Malacañang offices for the development, promotion and propagation of our national language. When my superiors in office sent me as a Colombo Plan fellow to London in January 1975, I realized later that it was a tricky ruse to stop my efforts in promoting the national language. When President Magsaysay perished from a plane crash -- in analyzing the mystery, I feel convinced that his having ordered the translation of the English Philippine National Anthem to Lupang Hinirang; his order to change the English military commands into Filipino; and his having instituted the practice of accepting the credentials of newly accredited envoys to the Philippines in delivering his official response in the native language -- all these contributed to his being eliminated from the position of national leadership. When Mr. Ferdinand E, Marcos issued on 17 January 1986 his memorandum to the Minister of Education and Culture, and all other members of the Cabinet -- "to create the conditions in your respective ministries and other instrumentalities of the government for the optimal promotion and development of Filipino as national language... etc." The EDSA One uprising was a deep CIA cover to thwart the Marcos memorandum; and so, after more than a month afterwards, Mr. Marcos was abducted by the US Marines, courtesy of the US CIA, and detained him in Hawaii until his death. I simply wish and I endeavor to adhere to the admoniitions of Dr. Jose Rizal, concerning language, as succintly elucidated in the discourses between Simoun and Basilio in the Seventh Chapter of El Filibusterismo.

I was really flabbergasted when someone demanded to stop discussions on language in this forum! I see in such a proposition the sinister ploy from the World Bank-IMF position to prolong, if not perpetuate the English language preponderance in all government institutions, and in all socio-cultural developments in the Philippines. The Philippine Constitution was drafted and retified 21 years ago. It is a great wonder why the provisions on language, particularly in SECTIONS 6 and 7 of ARTICLE XIV thereof, have not been implemented. And the President, supported by many legislators who were with her retinue during their recent visit to the USA, persists with the TREASONOUS move to return the English language to the educational system, and back to the classrooms. Can our countrymen support this position: to develop, promote and propagate the use of our national language in the conduct of government and in educational institutions? To suppress the development and propagation of our national language is an act of treason by our government leaders. I humbly submit.

Because I came across it by accident and got to read his poem MI ULTIMO ADIOS and it brought me to tears... I read a summary of his biography from an encyclopedia and my heart reaches out to such hero. I would love to learn more about him.

I don't see why there is a controversy to whether or not he was the nation's hero. The fact that some claim his devotion wasn't complete because he didn't use or incite violence is not well-founded. I believe that the life he lived when in exile helped him cleared his mind. Just the fact that he grew closer to the earth by doing agriculture and helping the youth and educating the people... all those things would have make him see how blood-shed wasn't the answer. What do you think? I'd like to know your perspective since my knowledge is limited to what I've just read. (Please forgive my crummy sentences, english is my second language).

Honestly, I'm not interested in this site. I know Dr. Jose Rizal was indeed one example of a unique many splendored species in the world that happens to be our national hero. However he is not my chosen hero, though Rizal is witty enough to be considered, but. I preferred Andres Bonifacio to be the national hero of the Philippines, in the sense that I salute his bravery, passion and courage to fight for the rights of the Filipinos against invaders.
